Bit Jugglers is dedicated to making UnderWare as user friendly and compatible as possible. Therefore, we are proud to bring you this update to UnderWare. The only files which have changed since version 1.0 are the UnderWare control panel and the following modules: Dragon, Jungleman, Pixies, Picture Window and Robber. The module changes are minor, except for Picture Window, which has several new features (see below).
The Updater
IMPORTANT!! PLEASE DISABLE ALL EXTENSIONS BEFORE YOU RUN THE UNDERWARE UPDATER! You can do this by choosing Restart from the Special menu and holding the Shift key down until the Macintosh finishes starting up.
This updater will update the UnderWare control panel and the following modules: Dragon, Jungleman, Pixies, Picture Window and Robber. The updater will look for the UnderWare™ control panel in the Control Panels folder of the current system folder and for the modules in the “UnderWare™ Files” folder (which is in the Preferences folder of the system folder by default). If the updater can not find UnderWare or any of the modules it will ask you to locate them or to skip to the next file to be updated.
Please be sure to restart your computer after the updater completes in order to use the updated UnderWare control panel.
New Features
The following features have been added to version 1.0.1:
• The "UnderWare™ Files" folder, Pictures Folder, and Patterns Folder may be moved out of the System Folder and stored in other locations(including a file server!), as long as identically named aliases are left in their place. The Folders must be restored to their original locations, however, before adding modules or patterns using the UnderWare Installer. Note that this will also work with an "After Dark Files" folder if you have one.
• We now support all After Dark™ modules (those from After Dark and More After Dark packages only) in Desktop Animation mode, except for Life II and Lunatic Fringe (since both of these modules allow user interaction). If you use Randomizer or MultiModule in Desktop Animation mode DO NOT include these two modules.
• UnderWare will now detect when another program has changed the desktop pattern, and will re-load the current Desktop module so that the new pattern will take effect.
• You'll notice a few changes in the UnderWare interface. Dynamic Desktop has been renamed Desktop Animation and the Demo button has been removed from Desktop Animation mode. Since the module was really being demoed as a screen saver this caused a lot of confusion.
• The Picture Window module has some new features. By default, Picture Window displays PICT files in the "Pictures Folder" in the UnderWare Files folder. Using Picture Window's new configuration dialog, any folder on a hard disk or file server may be used instead. Also, pictures can now be scaled to fill the screen.
What was fixed?
The UnderWare 1.0.1 control panel fixes the following incompatibilities which existed with version UnderWare 1.0:
• E-machines control panel
• Icon-it! Pro
• Now Fun Cursors/ClickChange - can now run After Dark™ modules on the desktop while cursor animation is enabled
• Soft Pivot control panel (for use with Radius Pivot monitors)
Note to users of Now Fun! Cursors and ClickChange:
Using software that animates your cursor (e.g. ClickChange or Now Fun!) can slow down UnderWare's Desktop Animation mode. You can prevent this slowdown by disabling the animated cursor.
Note to 24-Bit color users:
If your monitor is set to 24-bit color (millions of colors), you will only have patterns that are 64 by 64 pixel patterns and smaller to choose from. The UnderWare cdev will not let you apply 128 x128 patterns when you are running in millions of colors. This is due to a limitation in the Apple system software. To select a 128 by 128 pattern, your monitor must be set to thousands of colors or less.
Note to PowerBook users:
Some UnderWare Screen Saver modules occasionally need to read from the hard disk. This disk access may keep your Powerbook from going to sleep. Remember to manually put your PowerBook to sleep.
Attention CopyDoubler users:
CopyDoubler and CopyDoubler Lite versions 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 from Fifth Generation Systems/Symantec are incompatible with UnderWare if 32-Bit Addressing is turned off. Version 2.0.3 of CopyDoubler or CopyDoubler Lite, available from Symantec, fixes the problem.
Version 2.0 of CPU is incompatible with UnderWare. The current version of CPU is 2.0.1, and is fully compatible with UnderWare.
